Acne Skin Care

One of the most annoying things about having acne is finding an acne skin care treatment that actually works. People, often teenagers, usually will outgrow acne before they find a working skin care treatment. There are several treatments that actually work quite well. Examples include ProActiv and prescription-only Accutane. Another method of acne skin care is to put essential oils over the acne as it can help as well. Retin-a is another chemical that can help acne as well as get rid of wrinkles, skin discoloration, and other imperfections. We will examine each of these acne skin care treatments and how they work.

Perhaps the most commonly known skin care treatment is ProActiv. It works in three stages. The first stage is put on while in the shower as it is a type of body wash. The next stage is put on by a soaked cotton ball. Finally the lotion part is put on. ProActiv acne skin care treatment contains prescription grade benzoyl peroxide which helps dry out the skin. It also does not require a prescription to use while other treatment do.

Another form of acne skin care is the chemical Isotretinoin, better known as Accutane. It is a very powerful medicine that is taken only when the acne becomes very severe. It has a lot of side effects when taken in large doses or over a long period of time. Chapped lips, dried out skin, and dryness of the nose are three of the more common side effects present when taking Accutane. Possibly the most dangerous side effect is that Accutane causes birth defects. Accutane is typically taken over the course of four to six months or until the acne gets better.

Essential oils can be put over the acne to help them heal. These oils are primarily used in mild to moderate acne outbreaks. The most common essential oils used for acne treatment are tea tree oil, bergamot oil, clove oil, lavender oil, and roseweed oil. Because they can irritate the skin when not diluted, grapeseed oil is used to help dilute the essential oil. Once diluted, the oil mixture is rubbed onto the skin where it can help treat very mild to moderate acne.

Yet another type of acne skin care is retin-a, which is a derivative of vitamin A, just like Accutane. Like Accutane, it is only available by prescrption, but there are certain medications that can be bought over the counter that contain retin-a. It works by turning over the skin cells, thus helping remove blackheads and whiteheads before they become pimples. Retin-a is also one of the few medications applied on the skin that can help wrinkles.

There are many types of acne skin care treatments available, both prescription and non-prescription. ProActiv is the most known and one of the most effective treatments available. Accutane is a very strong prescription-only medicine that helps treat severe acne. Essential oils can be used to help treat very mild acne. Retin-a is another acne treatment, similar to Accutane, but not nearly as strong. Depending on the nature of the outbreak, one of these treatments is a person's best bet in treating acne.
